Coffee to Apples



True story!! I used to be one of those "I needs my coffee in the morning" people. Each day, I woke up and automatically went to the keurig to brew up a nice cup! I automatically felt better, and less morning-y once I had consumed my daily cup of Joe! I'd drink it, and ariund 2 or 3pm, I felt the need for naps, or some other sort of "pick-me-up". I was never big into Red Bull, or other artificial forms of energy. So, I wouldn't really take anything. I'd just go through my day with the tired feeling, and rest at bedtime.

Well, about 8 or so months ago, I began drinking a smoothie each day. It wasn't specific to a time, I just made sure that I had one each day. I would use 1-2 servings of fruit, 2 servings of veggies, water, hemp seeds, chia seeds, and sometimes flax seeds. I did this for about 3 days before I noticed a significant change in the way I felt when I woke up each morning. I woke up and felt...RESTED! So, on that fourth morning, I decided to give no coffee a go to see how I felt for the rest of the day! By the day's end, guess what?! I. Still. Had. Energy. This was soooo new to me because I was ALWAYS tired! On the fifth day, i tried it again! SAME RESULT! I felt energized! My mood was significantly better, and even my thoughts were more clear! Being someone who also constantly had a jumbled mind, this was a feeling that I wanted to hold on to forever!!!

I kept up with the whole no coffee thing for quite some time! I'd start my mornings with warm water, apple cider vinegar, and lemon juice. For breakfast, I'd have fruit and nuts. Honestly, I never even missed the coffee! I would still have an occasional Starbucks outing with my friends or clients, but I'd opt for the non-caffeinated beverages. I didn't feel the need for a caffeine boost, so I just simply didn't drink it! Fast forward to a few weeks ago. I had had a suuuuuuper busy week. I was traveling over the weekend and there were lots of late nights and early mornings involved. So, guess what I did?! I had a cup of coffee because I needed to stay awake for all that the day had for me! I felt the caffeine rush almost immediately, but along with it, I noticed major jitters! I was hardly able to focus pretty much that whole day, and I even had trouble falling asleep that night. I'm not sure if I reacted to it this way because it had been so long since I had any, or if this is the way I had always reacted to it, but it was what I knew as "having energy", so I was ok with it.

Whatever the case, it's crazy how you never know how bad something can make you feel until you know what it actually feels like to feel good! Needless to say, if I ever have coffee (because Starbucks...lol), it will be decaf! I can do without the jitters forever! So, the next time you need a jolt, I'd encourage you to try something other than coffee, Red Bull, or Coke! Try the smoothies; or the apple cider vinegar recipe I gave above; or even more simply, eat an apple! Your body will thank you!
